The classic Catch-22 of launching a physical product: you need custom packaging to look established, but custom everything requires custom-mold quantities — and custom molds start around 100,000 pieces. Most brands don't sell 100,000 units in their first year.
The way out is not finding a supplier with a smaller mold MOQ. It is changing what "custom" means. Here is the path we put new brands on, with the quantities to expect at each step.
Why custom molds demand six-figure quantities
A custom bottle shape is a production tooling decision: molds, furnace scheduling and a run long enough to amortize setup. That is why fully custom shapes start around 100,000 pcs — it is not gatekeeping, it is how glass economics work. If a supplier offers "custom shapes" at 5,000 pieces, read carefully: it is usually a stock shape with a custom finish, and that is fine — because a stock shape is the launch path.
The three tiers of "custom" glass packaging
[IMAGE PLACEHOLDER 1: Three bottles in a row showing the tiers: blank stock amber bottle, screen-printed bottle, fully custom-shaped bottle. To be replaced with a real photo before publishing.]
Tier 1 — Stock bottles, blank. From 500 pcs.
Our catalog has thousands of ready-goods series (company-stated), and blank stock items on many SKUs start from 500 pcs. At this tier you are choosing shape, color and closure — amber dropper bottle, black jar, frosted spray bottle — with no tooling and no waiting. Stock orders ship in 7–15 days.
Tier 2 — Stock bottles + your decoration. Typically from 2,000–5,000 pcs.
This is where most brands actually live: a stock bottle made yours by silk screen, hot stamping, frosting or a custom cap color. Decoration MOQs are driven by print setup, not molds — typically 2,000–5,000 pcs depending on process and bottle (our company policy baseline for logo printing is 5,000 pcs; some stock decoration programs run lower). Lead time: 7–15 working days after artwork approval. The methods and tradeoffs are compared in our custom printing guide (/posts/custom-glass-bottle-printing-options).
Tier 3 — Custom shape. From 100,000 pcs.
Your own mold. When a SKU proves itself at scale, the custom shape becomes worth it — and by then, Tier 1–2 sales paid for the decision with real data instead of a guess.
The tier structure in full detail — including what drives each minimum — is in our MOQ explainer (/packaging-moq-explained).
What a small brand can realistically launch with
A concrete, common configuration:
Primary bottle — Spec: Stock 30 ml amber dropper bottle; Quantity: 500–2,000 pcs; Notes: Blank, from in-stock program.
Decoration — Spec: 1-color silk screen logo; Quantity: 2,000–5,000 pcs; Notes: Or launch blank with labels, print at reorder.
Closure — Spec: Stock dropper, black or custom cap color; Quantity: matches bottle qty; Notes: Cap color customization at higher tiers.
Sample first — Spec: Blank stock sample; Quantity: 1 pc, $39; Notes: Refundable against bulk; ships 3–5 working days.
Total first-order exposure: hundreds of units, not hundreds of thousands. And because the bottle is stock, your second order is a replenishment, not a re-launch.
The label strategy: launching below decoration MOQ
If even 2,000 pieces is too deep for a first run, the standard move is blank stock + premium labels:
1. Buy blank stock bottles from 500 pcs.
2. Apply high-quality labels yourself or via a local printer — no MOQ negotiation with the glass supplier at all.
3. When the SKU proves demand, move the logo to silk screen or hot stamping at Tier 2 quantities.
Labels are a bridge, not a destination — on glass, cured screen print outlasts labels in humidity and handling — but as a launch tactic they decouple your packaging MOQ from your cash flow. We explain the decoration tradeoffs in the printing guide (/posts/custom-glass-bottle-printing-options).
Why low MOQ does not have to mean slow or risky
– Stock availability: our in-stock program holds roughly 500,000 pcs across ready-goods lines (company-stated), which is what makes 7–15 day lead times realistic instead of aspirational.
– Sample before bulk: the $39 refundable sample is exactly the small-brand instrument — see the sample ordering guide (/samples).
– Same QC at 500 pcs as at 500,000: production runs through the same quality control department regardless of quantity.
FAQ
What is the lowest MOQ for glass bottles with my logo?
Logo printing programs typically start at 2,000–5,000 pcs (policy baseline 5,000; some stock decoration programs lower, confirmed per SKU). Blank stock starts from 500 pcs on many SKUs. Below decoration MOQ, labels on blank stock are the standard bridge.
Is 500 pieces really economical for a supplier?
For stock items, yes — the tooling exists and the glass is in inventory; small orders price slightly higher per unit but ship from the same lines with the same QC. The unit price improves in steps as quantity rises.
When does a custom mold become worth it?
When a proven SKU's annual volume covers tooling plus a competitive unit price at 100,000+ pcs — usually after the shape has sold through at Tier 1–2 for several cycles.
Can I mix SKUs to reach an MOQ?
MOQ is per SKU because decoration setup is per SKU. Mixed-SKU orders are normal — the minimums just apply per line item. Send your basket of SKUs and quantities through our contact page (/contact) and we will quote the mix.
